Renewing My Indonesian Passport in Australia
Disclaimer: This post is based on my own recent experience renewing my Indonesian passport in Australia. It's my first time doing it here, so while I’ve done my best to capture the details accurately, do cross-check as things may change over time.
As you may know, renewing an Indonesian passport must be done in person—either at the Embassy or one of the Consulates of the Republic of Indonesia. These are located in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, and Darwin.
For me, living in the Gold Coast, the closest is Sydney. So that’s where I made my appointment. It helped that our family also wanted a short holiday there—road trip style! (I’ll share that adventure in another post.)
Remote Passport Services?
The good news: the consulate occasionally runs remote passport services, including in the Gold Coast. However, these are only announced about a month in advance, with limited quota. Not ideal if you need your passport renewed within a specific timeframe. If you're not in a hurry though, it’s worth watching out for! Follow the official Instagram of the Indonesian Consulate in Sydney (Or another location relevant to your state) — @indonesiainsyd — for updates.
Step-by-Step: What I Did
1. Register with Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs ("Lapor Diri")
This is a prerequisite: https://peduliwni.kemlu.go.id/beranda.html
You’ll need to upload softcopies of:
-
KTP
-
Passport
-
Proof of address (e.g. utility bill)
-
Australian visa grant (IMMI grant)
Processing takes about 3 weeks, but you’ll get a reference number right after submission that can be used to book your passport renewal appointment.
2. Book your passport appointment
I went through the Sydney consulate site:
https://www.kemlu.go.id/sydney/pelayanan-perwakilan/warga-negara-indonesia-wni/pengajuan-paspor-baru-maupun-penggantian
You’ll eventually be redirected to the online booking portal:

3. What to bring on the day
Current passport
-
Printout of the passport application form: Formulir Permohonan Dokumen Perjalanan RI
-
(Optional but safe) Printout of your appointment confirmation
-
Printout of the Current passport
Printout of the Birth certificate
Printout of the Proof of address (e.g. utility bill)
Printout of the Australia IMMI grant (Visa proof)
-
An Express Post Prepaid Envelope Medium from AusPost
-
Make sure to request signature on delivery at the counter—it’s only a few dollars more
-
Note: No need to bring passport photos—they’ll take one at the consulate.
4. On the day We parked at Pacific Square Mall (2 hours free parking), about 10 minutes walk to the consulate.
Once you arrive and check in, there’s nothing else to do—they’ll call you at your appointment time. The process was smooth:
-
Staff verified all the documents
-
Biometric and photo session (around 15 minutes)
-
Payment (credit card only!)
They said the passport would take around 14 days, but here’s the surprise: it arrived by post just 3 days later! Amazing. Might’ve just been lucky, so don’t count on the same speed every time.
This post is really for future-me when my passport expires again—but hopefully, it’ll help someone else too. Let me know if you’ve gone through the process and have tips to add!
